Fine Art BA
Encouraging the recognition of the complex character of contemporary art practice and discourses which surround and inform it, Fine Art has a long-established reputation integrating studio practice with art histories and theories on a 50:50 ratio. The high proportion of art history and theoretical input requires students with a commitment to research as well as an ability to develop and process their ideas in both independent and collaborative situations.
The course enables students to work across all fine art media with on-site facilities for digital media, painting, photography, printmaking and 3D processes. Studio modules are led by internationally practising artists, writers and curators and complemented by a Visiting Speaker seminar programme. Students will explore the role of the artist as practitioner, researcher and curator and are encouraged to visit and partake in contemporary art events, galleries and museums both regionally and nationally.
For those who find that their course work is leading them into a more theoretical arena, an option is available at Level 3 to undertake a higher proportion of critical and contextual study.
A degree in Fine Art provides a broad range of academic and practical skills leading to specialist careers in
multi- media, film and television, public and commercial art galleries,
museums and auction houses, curating and art publishing.
Many Fine Art graduates develop as successful full-time artists or go
on to careers in the many aspects of Arts Education. A high proportion of our students pursue postgraduate studies.
